Promoting Thankfulness and Gratitude this Holiday Season

The holiday season is the perfect time to reflect and focus on what we are grateful for from the year. While much happiness can result from this thankfulness and gratitude, it might be a bit challenging at times to focus on the big picture, appreciate the things and the people you have in your life.  And of course, happiness means different things to different people. But focusing on what you have and what you can appreciate can make a noted difference in your overall wellbeing. Here’s a few ways you can promote more gratitude in your own life this year.

Lose the Perfectionist

Perfection is in most cases unachievable and certainly unsustainable. Good enough is most often what will make you happy. Figure out at what point your good enough state is capable of making you happy, and work to achieve that. Chasing perfection can be stressful and inevitably damaging to your self-worth and peace of mind. Learn when settling is healthy for your overall wellness.

Make Gratitude A Daily Practice

Find one thing about every day that makes you grateful for how your life is going. Positivity and gratitude can have a powerful impact on your overall happiness. While overloading on positivity to the point of ignoring big problems won’t work in your favor, remembering that not everything is terrible will put you in a much better frame of mind. So take the time at some point in your day, every day, to think of something that makes you happy. That little reminder that there is good in even tough situations can help you maintain a happy and healthy mind.

Reframe any Challenges

Another way to train your mind toward defaulting to happiness is to rethink your problem-solving process. When a problem comes along, as they undoubtedly will, do something to reframe your thinking around it. Think of the issue as an obstacle, rather than a set-back. Obstacles are barriers to success, but not dead ends. Obstacles can be overcome. Something so simple can actually really help you reframe the issue at hand, prepare you for the effort it will take to accomplish your goal, but reassure yourself that it is still possible. So train you brain to think about problems in a new way to increase your happiness overall.

Perform Random Acts of Kindness

It’s amazing what a simple act of kindness can do for your own wellbeing. Making other people happy can also have a big impact on your own happiness levels. Little acts of kindness can be anything from sharing a complement with someone, leaving a nice note for a loved one, or even buying a coffee for the person behind you in line. Little things that you do simply out of wanting to make someone else’s day a little better can give you a real happiness boost, especially when they’re unexpected. That kindness in tern promotes empathy and compassion, leading to a sense of interconnectedness with others. Compassion and kindness reduce stress, boost our immune systems, and help reduce negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, and depression. All that adds up to a happier state of mind just from doing something nice for someone else. Give it a try!
