How to Support Your Employees’ Mental Health at Work

The conversation around burnout, both professional and personal, has been an important one. And it is unlikely to fade from conversation given how stretched so many of us are these days. Helping employees manage their stress and recover from bouts of burnout may seem like just another thing to add to the to do list, but it is an important approach to take to ensure your business goals are met. Here are four things you can coach your employees to do to make sure they are taking care of their mental health when times get tough.

Be Intentional with Your Time

In the rush to get everything done, it’s very easy to get lost in the thrash. Remember that in order to get everything done, you need to be very intentional with your time, both at home and at work. Know what’s most important to you and your career. Figure out what the priorities really are. Set firm boundaries, both with yourself and others. And balance out what needs to be done now and what can wait for later.

For many of us, being intentional with our time means knowing what is most important, and then prioritizing that effort. Some things seem urgent and important but they are actually just manufactured crises that merely distract us from what really matters. Look at your activities and your responsibilities with a critical eye and make sure that you need to do what remains on your plate. Remember that by saying no to the things that you know you aren’t able to do well, you can say yes to the things you know you can do better.

Exercise is Good for the Brain and the Body

Exercise is a tried and true stress-buster. It’s hard to make it a priority when things get really busy, but making sure to incorporate it into your day (or week even) can really help combat stress and burnout. It helps retain focus when your back at your desk and improves mood at the same time. Nothing helps work through burnout quite like it.

Get Enough Sleep

If you’re like most folks, it can be a challenge to say when exactly you fall asleep. Whether you’re up late working or watching tv, those evening hours are much better put toward getting the rest you need. Go to bed on time. Make sure you are getting the amount of sleep and the quality of sleep your body needs to conquer your goals.  It’ll help your body actively bust up stress that’s weighing you down during the day.

Attitude and Morale Do Make A Difference

If you’re finding yourself fighting against bad day after bad day, or are just not feeling like you are in a positive place with your work, chances are that you could really use an attitude check. If you are tired from a long weekend, or are otherwise not fully focused on the work, don’t fall into the routine of cutting yourself too much slack. Try to convince yourself that work time is for being productive, and use that energy to kick start your can-do attitude. Breaks are important, and without them we all risk burnout. But if we are having trouble getting into the right frame of mind, some positive self-talk and surrounding yourself with equally motivated people can be just what you need to get the most out of your day.
