How to become a better version of yourself this fall

Self-care has been a popular buzz word lately, but the importance of taking care of your health and wellness, especially during such stressful and challenging times, is more clear now than ever before. But unpacking what that “best version” of yourself can be challenging.

The truth is that just as self-care is different for everybody, your best self is different than anyone else.  Understanding what your goals are and who you want to be on your best day is frankly the lion’s share of the work. But here are a few ways you can start to look at your

Take Care of Your Health

Your health is reliably the most important aspect of living your best life. If there are things you can do on a regular basis, such as eating better, working out, making sure you find time for those wellness checks and dentist appointments, make them all a priority to help live your best life. Sometimes that’s easier than others, but when you put your health first, many of the other benefits of a life well lived will fall into place.

Create a Relaxing Home Environment

Many of us are spending a lot more time at home these days so make sure it’s serving you well. Make sure it’s functional and relaxing. Bring a little of the outside in if you can. Potted plants are great to refresh a space visually as well as clean your indoor air. Open up your windows, let in the sunlight when you can. Even if you live in the city, a fresh breeze and some sunshine can help lift your mood and encourage self-care during stressful times. Tidy up and set in place processes or habits that help keep things neat and clean so you don’t have the added stress of a dirty living environment.

Manage Your Media Consumption

News and social media can be surprisingly stressful if not taken in managed doses. Too much or unlimited media consumption can have a very real impact on your stress levels and overall mood. When it feels like things are getting to be too much, even if you just want to stay on top of current events or connected with friends and family, it’s ok to take a break. Know when you need to turn off the firehose, even just for a little while. It’ll do wonders for your mental health and it’ll all be there when you are ready to come back.

Set Goals that Motivate and Inspire You

When it comes to living your best life, career plays an important part in that equation. It’s important to be honest about where you are and where you want to be. Setting small, achievable goals is a good tactic to get you through your workday or month, but you also need something big to aim for so that you are inspired in the long term. Set challenging goals that make you want to get out of bed in the morning, do your best work, and celebrate when you achieve your smaller goals. Focus on achievements that are important to you and that you will value in the long run, rather than just reasonable achievements that help you get your work done. Don’t focus on goals that are completely unreasonable or which have no clear path to achievement. But don’t sell yourself short by setting a goal that you have no vested interest in the outcome either. Make it a priority and go to work every day with that goal at the top of your mind.
