Find Ways to Relax (Even At Home)
When once before, going to an exercise class or getting out and visiting people was a great form of self-care, it can seem like many self-care practices are no longer available to us. But the truth is that many of those practices can easily be done in the safety of your own home. Getting in a workout in your living room can be just as good for you as going out to the gym. Connecting with people over the phone or over video chat can also help you feel less alone and boost your mood. Reading or listening to podcasts can be a nice break from the TV or movie watching.
Your home should be your first choice for relaxation, so make it a relaxing place. Bring a little of the outside in if you can. Potted plants are great to refresh a space visually as well as clean your indoor air. Open up your windows, let in the sunlight when you can. Even if you live in the city, a fresh breeze and some sunshine can help lift your mood and encourage self-care during stressful times.
Manage Your Media Consumption
News and social media can be surprisingly stressful if not taken in managed doses. Too much or unlimited media consumption can have a very real impact on your stress levels and overall mood. When it feels like things are getting to be too much, even if you just want to stay on top of current events or connected with friends and family, it’s ok to take a break. Know when you need to turn off the firehose, even just for a little while. It’ll do wonders for your mental health and it’ll all be there when you are ready to come back.
Practice Excellent Personal Hygiene
Self-care during COVID means taking an active part in limiting your exposure to the virus. That includes things like washing your hands for 20 seconds with soap after touching surfaces that may have been exposed to coronavirus. Practice social distancing when out in public, including at work, when shopping, and so on. Wear a mask when you are unable to keep a 6-foot distance from other people. Use hand sanitizer to clean your hands when soap and water are not available. Be mindful of how your decisions may impact other people’s lives. The risks for some may be greater than others, but the responsibility to manage community exposure to the virus is the responsibility of us all.
Make Sure You Cover Your Basics
Mental wellness also depends on how you are taking care of yourself physically. Make sure you get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Eat healthy foods and limit alcohol consumption. Practice mindfulness and meditation if it’s helpful to you. Spend time with friends and family if you can. Make sure you have a strong social network of positive role models. Fill your time with enjoyable activities or hobbies to keep your mind active. These simple things will actually go a long way to helping you maintain a strong mindset for the coming year.
